This upcoming Tuesday, please bring the following with you:

1) Make sure you have a physical copy of The Hunger Games with you. You should do this every class (have a physical copy of the book we are discussing that day with you). You will be quizzed on the portion you were required to read for class, and that quiz will require enough close reading that those of you who have read the book in the past must have re-read it for the class. (In other words, this quiz will be even more specific than many of our quizzes). This is a courtesy warning.

2) Briefly research one American reality TV show, and be prepared to talk about:

-How it reflects something specific about American cultural values. What does it teach us about our culture?

-How it intersects with The Hunger Games. Suzanne Collins is critiquing reality TV culture in the book. Give a specific example of a moment in the book (have a quotation/page number ready) where you can see a parallel between the show and the book. What is Collins try to say about reality TV culture?

-What sub-genre of reality TV does it fit into? Is there anything about this sub-genre that is particularly interesting, or reflective of our culture's values?

Please write down your answers to these questions and be prepared to turn them in.

1) Discuss how the characters understanding of the tower/tunnel changes over time. What might be significant about the fact that the biologist is the only one who can see the Tower's true nature? Why is it important that its true nature is not revealed to her right away? What has to happen first? 2) Discuss the disciplines of the main characters, their fields of study. Why is it significant that they are not named directly? What is meaningful about their fields of study in relationship to Area X? 3) What is uncanny about the environment of Area X? (See definition on board). 4) What might be significant about the fact that the map is not accurate from the moment the characters enter Area X? Annihilation

The ANTHROPOCENE is an unofficial, debated term between geologists and environmentalists that describes the epoch (time period) we are living in. It assumes that we have moved out of the Holocene (the epoch that began 11,700 years ago after the last Ice Age) and into a new epoch where humankind has caused significant changes to the environment, such as  mass extinctions of plant and animal species, polluting the oceans and altering the atmosphere, among other lasting impacts.
